The start of a new year is the perfect time to focus on your home and prepare it for the months ahead. Here’s a checklist of essential January home maintenance tasks to kick off the year:

1. Check and Replace HVAC Filters

Your HVAC system has been working hard through the holiday season to keep you warm. Dirty filters can reduce efficiency and air quality. Check your filters and replace them if needed—this simple task can lower energy bills and prolong your system’s life. Check your filter for filter life expectancy -- Normally, change your filter at minimum every 3 months.  This also helps with winter viruses. 

2. Inspect Weather Stripping and Door Seals

January often brings cold winds and snow. Inspect the weather stripping around doors and windows for wear and tear. Replace or repair any gaps to prevent drafts and keep heating costs down.

Old home? Drafty windows?  Take the time to purchase and install plastic on the homes windows to reduce drafts and help keep heating costs down. 

3. Clean Dryer Vents

Dryer lint buildup can lead to inefficiency and even fire hazards. Take time to clean out the lint trap and the dryer vent thoroughly. It’s a small step with big safety benefits.

Did you experience a recent snow storm?  Ensure to go to the outside of your home and clear piled up dirt from around your dryers exterior vent, to prevent fire hazards. 

4. Protect Your Pipes from Freezing

If temperatures in your area drop below freezing, it’s crucial to protect your pipes. Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas like basements or garages, and let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold to prevent freezing.

5. Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

The new year is an excellent time to ensure your safety devices are in working order. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if necessary.

6. Inspect the Roof and Gutters

Snow and ice can take a toll on your roof and gutters. Look for signs of damage, like missing shingles or clogged gutters, and address them before they become bigger problems.

7. Declutter and Organize

Take advantage of the post-holiday downtime to declutter your home. Start with storage areas like the attic, basement, or garage, and organize your belongings for easier access throughout the year.

In snowy regions, ice dams can form on roofs, leading to water damage. Check your roof’s edges and gutters for ice buildup, and take steps to prevent future occurrences by improving attic insulation and ventilation.

While it might be cold outside, it’s a great time to plan ahead. Think about spring landscaping, painting, or other projects you’d like to tackle when the weather warms up.
