As a real estate agent, I am committed to helping my clients navigate the complexities of buying, selling, and owning property. Recently, I completed a mitigating risk class to better understand the evolving landscape of online scams, and I wanted to share some critical information to protect you and your investments.
One of the latest scams making the rounds involves a chillingly personal email. These emails contain detailed information about your home, family, and even a photo of your property. The scammers demand $2,000 in Bitcoin, threatening consequences if you don't comply. Remember, these threats are false. If you ever receive such a message, contact local authorities immediately and avoid engaging with the scammers.
Another common tactic involves fraudulent listings on social media. You might see posts on platforms like Facebook advertising "rent-to-own" homes at prices that seem too good to be true. These scams are designed to collect your personal information or steal money through fake deposits. When in doubt, consult with a licensed real estate professional to verify listings.
While you're on Facebook, you may also notice posts about missing children, injured animals, or found pets on marketplace pages. These posts are designed to pull at your heartstrings, encouraging you to share them. But beware: sharing these posts can put you on a target list for scammers.
A more surprising scam involves something as simple as a USB stick found in a parking lot. Curious individuals may be tempted to plug it into their computer, but doing so can unleash a virus that tracks your browsing history and steals passwords.
This brings me to another vital point: cybersecurity. Protecting your personal and financial information is essential, especially in real estate transactions. Consider using a password manager so each account has a unique password. With so many potential breaches, a password manager can also alert you if someone attempts to access your accounts.
Enable two-step verification on all your accounts for added security, and think about using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for an extra layer of protection when you’re online. Also, take advantage of free credit freezes through TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian to help safeguard your financial information from identity theft.
Staying informed and vigilant is key to avoiding these scams and protecting your investments. As always, if you have any concerns or questions, feel free to reach out—I’m here to help guide you every step of the way.
