My youngest child just graduated high school, and my oldest is getting married on Saturday! As a single mom, these milestones are bittersweet. Watching my children grow and embark on their own journeys is incredibly fulfilling, but it also means that my once-bustling home is becoming quieter.

With these changes, downsizing has been on my mind a lot lately. The big family home that was once filled with laughter and activity is now starting to feel too large for just me. The thought of moving to a smaller, more manageable space is appealing, not just for practical reasons but also for the fresh start it represents.

For many empty nesters, downsizing offers a host of benefits:

1. Lower Maintenance: Smaller homes are easier to maintain, both in terms of cleaning and upkeep.
2. Financial Freedom: Selling a larger home can free up equity, providing financial flexibility for travel, hobbies, or retirement savings.
3. Lifestyle Change: A smaller home can mean a simpler, more streamlined lifestyle, freeing up time for activities and interests that may have been put on hold.

Personal Experience

As I prepare for my oldest’s wedding and adjust to my new status as an empty nester, I’m also exploring my options. Downsizing isn’t just about finding a smaller space—it’s about finding the right space for this new chapter of life. For me, I desire to be slightly out of town with a small ranch, a big porch, and a little land.  The goal is to create a home that supports my evolving lifestyle.
